Rihanna Teases 'Saturday Night Live' Skit

'I'm excited to perform, but definitely excited to do another digital short,' she tells MTV News.

Last December, Rihanna appeared in an Emmy-nominated "Saturday Night Live" sketch. This week, the Loud singer will return to the "SNL" stage as the night's performer, and she promised that she will appear in another digital short.

"I'm excited, of course. We're gonna do a [sketch], definitely," she told MTV News on Thursday. "I was most looking forward to that, 'cause I really enjoyed it last time. I really enjoyed, like, the whole 'SNL' experience, so I'm excited to perform, but definitely excited to do another digital short."

For those not familiar with the sketch, Rihanna visited the school of Shy Ronnie (played by Andy Samberg) and sang the hook on Ronnie's rap song. She occasionally had to tell him, in song, to "speak up" or "I'll take it from here," because Ronnie barely gets above a whisper when he raps.

The video was just a glimpse into Rihanna's acting skills, which she will certainly display on the big screen in the upcoming "Battleship" movie. She told MTV News that her recent on-set experience has made her a better actor, which she hopes to show off Saturday night, live or in a pre-taped short.

"Acting classes as well as learning from the experience of acting and filming definitely will help, because that's all acting in those skits," she said. "So, definitely, it comes in handy."

Are you looking forward to seeing Rihanna's newfound acting skills on "SNL"? Let us know in the comments!

Kid Cudi Reveals How He Ended Up On Kanye West's 'Gorgeous'

By Steven Roberts

Along with the striking imagery in Kanye West's "Runaway," people are still talking about the short film's soundtrack. The visual's vibrant colors are paralleled by some of West's best production work. Just ask Kid Cudi.

Cudder was hanging out in the studio one day when he overheard the beat for what would eventually become West's "Gorgeous."

" 'Gorgeous' was one of those records that, as soon as I heard the beat, I was like, 'Man, this is the one. This is that "This Can't Be Life" Kanye beat,' " Cudi recalled, referencing the 'Ye-produced Jay-Z track. " 'This is that classic 'Ye beat. I want to be on this.' I came up to him, and I was like, 'Man, are you working on this record? Are you working on this beat?' He goes, 'Yeah ... do you got an idea for it?' I was like, 'Yeah, I might.' I didn't. I was lying like a mother----er. I was like, 'Yeah, man, I want to get on this joint.' "

The song is featured in the third scene of "Runaway," as Selita Ebanks' phoenix walks around the garden, interacting with the animals and plants, while Kanye watches her from inside. It will be on West's highly anticipated My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy album and also features Raekwon.

Cudi said they put the track together the same way they've put together their previous collaborations: Kanye throws out an idea, and he tries his best to make his part fit.

"That's my goal. Whatever Kanye tells me, I just try to put it in my little machine and make the perfect solution for it," Cudi said. "That's always our collab formula, and that's just how 'Gorgeous' came about. He just kind of told me what he was trying to say, I threw out some words, we rearranged words, and we came out with a bunch of different options before we come up with the hook."

From what you've heard so far, what do you think of "Gorgeous"? Are you excited to hear the full song? Let us know in the comments!

Jon Stewart Rally Joined By Sheryl Crow, Ozzy Osbourne

In between performances from music titans such as Ozzy Osbourne and the O' Jays during Saturday's (October 30) "Rally to Restore Sanity And/Or Fear," "The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart, conservative caricature Stephen Colbert and a cast of funnypeople quipped about everything from Chilean miners to the "Real Housewives of New Jersey." Despite the deluge of laughs, the event's overall message could possibly be summed up by the groovy mantra of the O' Jays feel-good classic "Love Train": People all over the world, join hands.

Philadelphia collective the Roots kicked off the three-hour live event with a 40-minute set packed with a bunch of the band's notable jams. Bundled up in a camel coat, Black Thought led the outfit through their jocular Phrenology joint "Thought at Work" and the How I Got Over album's eponymous cut, in the shadow of The Capitol Building. John Legend joined the Roots crew for "Dear God 2.0" and the musicians' covers of soul classics "Hard Times" and "Little Ghetto Boy" from the collaborative album Wake Up! Legend recounted the story behind Bill Withers' "I Can't Write Left Handed" before launching into a bluesy, soulful rendition powered by a fiery solo from guitarist Kirk Douglas, who also doubled up on vocal duties when the band played "The Seed 2.0." The stars closed the set with Curtis Mayfield's uplifting hit "Move On Up."

"MythBusters" hosts Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman engaged the thousands of rally attendees in a few geeky pastimes, including a large-scale version of the Wave and an attempt to create a literal "groundswell" by commanding everyone to jump simultaneously.

But the crowd really went nuts when the event's figurehead, Jon Stewart, strolled onstage in khakis and a dark blazer, greeted by a sea of waving hands nearly an hour after the event began. Stewart introduced a patriotic rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" sung by four U.S. troops, before screaming to the audience, "Are you ready to restore sanity?" After bantering about the racial makeup of rallies — quipping that an event with too many white people is "racist" while an occasion marked by too many people of color means they're "asking for something" such as equal rights — Stewart, with the help of some "Daily Show" correspondents jokingly asked the crowd to count off to ensure the racial composition of the rally matched that of the country.

Stephen Colbert, pulled off a dramatic entrance that referenced the odyssey of the trapped Chilean miners, initially speaking to the crowd via camera from his "fear bunker" and ascending from below the stage in a capsule-like contraption.

Other highlights of the day included a speech from Father Guido Sarducci, who attempted to pin down the "right" religion, and a poem recited by actor Sam Waterston. Former Jet Blue flight attendant Steven Slater and "Real Housewives of New Jersey" starlet Teresa Giudice sent video apologies for their famed freak-outs. Comedian Tim Meadows appeared as PK Winsome during a taped skit, urging attendees to splurge on souvenirs, and basketball great Kareem Abdul-Jabbar made an appearance.

Ozzy Osbourne and Yusuf Islam — formerly known as Cat Stevens — surprised fans with performances of their respective hits "Crazy Train" and "Peace Train," with Colbert supporting the former and Stewart championing the latter. R&B legends the O' Jays followed-up with their well-worn jam "Love Train."

Soul great Mavis Staples teamed up with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy for a tender, acoustic version of their collaboration "You Are Not Alone" from the R&B legend's latest album. Rocker Sheryl Crow was accompanied by Kid Rock on the piano for a song that implores listeners to help out, crooning, "I can't stop the war, shelter homeless, feed the poor ... The least that I can do is care." The performance featured a video-taped verse from embattled MC T.I., who wasn't able to attend.

Stewart and Colbert also dished out awards, such as the Medal of Reasonableness to citizen Velma Hart for her levelheaded questioning of President Obama and a Medal of Fear to the news organizations who barred their employees for attending the rally.

However, when Stewart signed off at the close of the three-hour event, he maintained that the rally wasn't just about poking fun. Instead, he urged the thousands of attendees to remember that the hyperbolic images of political extremists and religious nut jobs that clutter the media are not true representations of the American people. The speech was followed by a brief performance from legendary crooner Tony Bennett, who dished out an a cappella version of "America the Beautiful." The crowd's chants of "USA" rang in the air before all of the show's performers hit the stage one final time to join Mavis for the Staples Singers' 1972 single "I'll Take You There.

'The Walking Dead' Lurches From Comic Book To AMC

TV show, based on Robert Kirkman's zombie series, premieres Halloween night.
By Rick Marshall

This weekend, hordes of flesh-hungry zombies will finally shamble their way from printed page to television screen as AMC premieres its new post-apocalyptic horror series "The Walking Dead" on Halloween night.

Based on writer Robert Kirkman's long-running comic book series that debuted in 2003, "The Walking Dead" chronicles the trials and tribulations of former Kentucky police officer Rick Grimes as he struggles to first find then protect his family in a nightmarish landscape where corpses walk and living humans are an endangered species.

The premiere of "The Walking Dead" culminates just over a year of casting, filming and near-constant conversation about the project among comic book and horror fans, and puts Oscar-winning filmmaker Frank Darabont ("The Shawshank Redemption," "The Mist") in the director's chair for the pilot episode, "Days Gone Bye." No stranger to horror fare, Darabont also serves as executive producer of the series, and wrote or co-wrote each episode in the initial six-episode arc.

When MTV News visited the set of "The Walking Dead" in June, the fan-favorite auteur discussed the project amid overturned cars and abandoned military vehicles in a closed-off section of downtown Atlanta — with a massive crowd of background actors made up to look like zombies milling about just a few feet away.

Comparing the tone of the series to a classic western, Darabont likened lead actor Andrew Lincoln to well-known Hollywood heroes of the Old West, such as "High Noon" star Gary Cooper.

"I always kind of knew it, but it really came home as we've been shooting the last few days — it really does turn into a Western at times," Darabont said. "You see [Lincoln] riding into the dusty streets of the town here, only it happens to be Atlanta with these skyscrapers, [and] it's a very cool mix of visual elements. There's a little John Ford meets 'I Am Legend' thing going on here."

Kicking off with a 90-minute premiere, "The Walking Dead" has AMC hoping it has yet another award-winning series on its hands to tout alongside such recent hits as "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad." In fact, Lincoln recently told MTV News it was the latter of those two series that inspired Darabont's approach to "The Walking Dead."

"He said, 'I want you to watch two things,' " Lincoln said of his early conversations with Darabont about the role. " 'Breaking Bad,' which is a show he was a huge admirer of, so I rewatched the first series. And he said, 'Watch Gary Cooper,' so I watched 'High Noon.' "

For Darabont, the tonal connection between the two projects was so significant that he recruited "Breaking Bad" director/producer Michelle MacLaren to direct the series' second episode.

Still, despite the connections between "The Walking Dead" and any existing movie or television projects, Darabont and the series' creative team and cast have remained adamant about one aspect throughout the project's development: The source of its appeal lies firmly in the characters, tone and visual foundation established by Kirkman and the comic book's artists, Tony Moore and Charlie Adlard.

"What I find is that we're very much on course with the philosophy we approached the show with," Darabont told MTV News earlier this month. "From the very first, I always said to Robert Kirkman, 'I want to follow the narrative path you've laid out, but I want to take as many interesting detours and step off the path for a little bit as [much as] we can, as long as it feels organic to the overall.' "

"The Walking Dead" premieres Sunday, Halloween night, at 10 p.m. ET on AMC.

Camille Grammer Feels "Completely Abandoned" by Kelsey

For someone who describes herself as a "very private person," Camille Grammer is doing a lot of public talking these days.

The Real Housewife of Beverly Hills is especially open about ex-husband Kesley Grammer, who left her soon after she agreed to a role on the Bravo reality series. In an interview with People, Camille says it's lucrative "cathartic" to discuss the divorce, as she does in detail via the following excerpts...

Camille and Kelsey Grammer

How did she learn she'd been dumped?
In June I got a phone call from a mutual friend in New York who was upset by behavior of his that she'd seen... I texted him again and he wrote: "I don't want to talk." I wrote, "We've been together for 14 years; I deserve an explanation." Finally, three hours later, he called me. He basically said, "I don't want to be married anymore."

How did she react?
I asked him if there was anything we could work on. I offered to go to therapy. Having children, I wasn't ready to throw in the towel. But his mind was already made up. I started crying and he said, "Oh, grow up." I said, "What about our children?" and he said, "They'll get over it." It was harsh.

How does she feel now?
I feel completely abandoned. I feel dismissed. This all happened very quickly for me. We don't even speak. He doesn't want to. For me, having two children together, it's very important that the two of us communicate. He only wants to communicate via e-mail, through our lawyers or a therapist who acts as a mediator.

How have the kids reacted?
They still don't realize he's not coming back. They think their daddy is busy doing a play. I'm trying to work with them on the concept that he's not going to come home the way they think he is.

Nicki Minaj Calls Kanye West 'A Genius'

'Kanye West is everything that I didn't think he was,' Queens lyricist says on 'RapFix Live.'
By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Nicki Minaj might have read Kanye West wrong at first.

Years ago, the Lil Wayne protégé thought the megastar would "hate" her because of his cushy relationships with conscious-leaning rappers Common and Talib Kweli.

In 2010, though, 'Ye would praise her, saying she had the potential to be the world's second-biggest rapper — with only Eminem ahead of her.

"I had this conversation, 'Kanye West is gonna hate me,' " Minaj told MTV News. "[But] I met him and it was, 'Oh, come here, I want you to look at these naked girls.' Kanye West is everything that I didn't think he was, and a genius."

Minaj and West collaborated on two tracks for West's forthcoming My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and the Queens lyricist supplies the opening narration for 'Ye's short film "Runaway."

After having worked with West, the Queens lyricist said she learned to appreciate his passion for music.

"He doesn't limit himself," she explained. "I heard him say the other day, not in these words, 'I'm not doing this for the masses, I'm not doing this for mainstream, you have to come to me, come get this art if you want it.' I think that's important for all artists to feel that way — we make so many changes because we want to please everybody. But at the end of the day, you can't please everybody."

Rihanna Says Photos In Her New Book 'Say So Much'

Fans get to see 'all the things that they hadn't seen that were going on behind the scenes,' she tells MTV News of self-titled tome.
By Rebecca Thomas

Rihanna signs copies of her book in New York City Wednesday
Photo: Jason Kempin/ Getty Images

NEW YORK — Her fervently tracked fifth album, Loud, is just weeks from its November 16 due date, but on Wednesday (October 27), Rihanna was reflecting on her last LP, the moody Rated R. The Bajan singer turned up at a Fifth Avenue Barnes & Noble bookstore to sign copies of her new book.

Her self-titled tome is a photographic document of the year that followed the release of that dark disc and her triumphant Last Girl on Earth Tour. The widely photographed star told MTV News that her Rihanna Navy will get an intimate peek — unlike the relentless paparazzi pics that paper the blogs — at her life with this book, shot by creative director Simon Henwood.

"I think it was really special to have behind-the-scenes photos, you know, pictures that the fans haven't seen before, all together of a very specific moment of my life, an album of my life," Rihanna told us.

From stage lights to street lights, the 22-year-old stunner shines in front of the camera and perhaps never more so than in the images that capture Rihanna in the moments between show times: Admirers will swoon over a picture of the singer clutching her hoodie on a Paris rooftop with the Eiffel Tower visible in the distance or another rather decadent snap that shows her feasting on room service with just a table napkin and black suspenders doubling as a shirt.

"They just get to see all the things that they hadn't seen that were going on behind the scenes; really cool stuff, not typical," Rihanna, draped in a calf-length floral frock, explained. "They're really fun photos. And even for me, when I look at them, they say so much. Photos really tell a thousand words."

The "Only Girl (In the World)" singer had her own favorite, though, and she thumbed through the oversize collection to show us a green-tinged photo of her onstage in an elaborate headdress that calls to mind Venetian blinds. ("I call it the 'Disturbia' one ... I love that one.")

So what essential items does a globe-trotting songstress making her debut headlining tour pack when your concert schedule takes you as far as the Belgian city of Antwerp?

"Essential?" she thought for a moment. "Comfortable, warm clothes for the bus — the bus is always freezing! And you always want to be comfortable on the bus. Not much heels. You're pretty much going from the bus to the stage, back to the studio ... back to the stage. So it's not a lot of clothes to pack: sneakers, sweats, pajamas, stuff like that," she smiled.

Will you check out Rihanna's book? Let us know in the comments!

Kanye West's 'Runaway' Is About 'Remaking,' Performance Artist Says

'It doesn't make any apologies ... about the unmaking the artist goes through in order to remake themselves,' Aliza Shvarts tells MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Matt Harper

Kanye West in "Runaway"
Photo: Def Jam

Kanye West's "Runaway" film offers an arresting brew of sound and imagery, punctuated by one dialogue-heavy scene: 'Ye sits with a winged creature called a phoenix (played by model Selita Ebanks) as she confesses that she must destroy herself in a quest to return to her fantastical world.

"All of the statues that we see, where do you think they came from?" she asks him.

"I think that artists carved them years and years ago," West replies.

"No, they are phoenix turned to stone," Ebanks responds. "Do you know what I hate most about your world? Anything that is different, you try to change. You try to tear it down. You rip the wings off the phoenix and they turn to stone. And if I don't burn, I will turn to stone. If I don't burn, I can't go back to my world."

Those lines are the key to understanding "Runaway," which premiered Saturday night on MTV. The short film was shot at a pivotal time in West's career, as he seeks to remake his career from the ashes of controversy. And rather than being a straightforward piece of popcorn entertainment, "Runaway" has unapologetically artistic aspirations. That's why we turned to a performance artist with a bit of notoriety herself — Aliza Shvarts, who became embroiled in an abortion-as-art controversy at Yale in 2008 — to help us further decipher its true meaning and the phoenix's desire for a fiery rebirth.

"Insofar as this is a film about remaking, it's a film about a very scary and painful and overwhelming sense of remaking," Shvarts said. "The image of the fire in those instances is really a powerful and terrifying image. I think what that maybe says about this larger project of Kanye's and how he might invest himself in these particular images and how these images might relate to a process he himself has felt — it doesn't make any apologies or offer any assurances about the unmaking the artist goes through in order to remake themselves."

And in the process, Shvarts said, Kanye is attempting to reach what she termed "the transcendent sublime," the notion that "somehow we have to be open to unmaking ourselves to remake ourselves in other ways."

Kristen Stewart Discusses The Effects Of Doing 'Crazy' Press

'It gets a little tiring, and it shows,' she admits to MTV News.
By Eric Ditzian

Kristen Stewart

It's not that easy to be Kristen Stewart in the midst of a virtual nonstop global promo tour for a "Twilight" film: the same questions over and over again, cities blending into one another, a seemingly endless stream of red carpets, rapid-fire junket interviews and extended sit-down chats.

"It gets crazy when it's so much," Stewart told us in, yes, an extended sit-down chat, "and it seems to be growing."

No doubt. At least she'll have a long break between "Twilight" releases: "Eclipse" hit theaters this summer, and the first part of "Breaking Dawn" won't arrive until November 2011. Rest up, KStew, so you don't find your eyes glazing over as reporters hurl questions about Bella Swan's sex romp of a honeymoon or her gruesome birth scene.

"Sometimes that happens, and it's really not good," she admitted. "It gets a little tiring, and it shows. But I think that's only natural."

Yet when it comes to promoting "Welcome to the Rileys," her indie flick about a teen stripping and turning tricks in New Orleans, Stewart is more than happy to make the PR rounds.

"Today is really exciting, because I didn't think I was going to have the opportunity to talk about 'Welcome to the Rileys,' " she said. "I thought this movie was going to do nothing, basically. This is fun. This is really, really cool."

A little less cool, however, is doing an interview next to famously press-shy co-star James Gandolfini. "I'm about to do two interviews with him," Stewart told us. "He's making me nervous. If he's nervous and he's uncomfortable, he's going to suck me right into it."

Check out everything we've got on "Welcome to the Rileys."

Dancing With the Stars Gossip: Poor Jennifer Grey Effort Blamed on Derek Hough Eyeliner Mishap

This one's straight out of the Lindsay Lohan Book of Bad Excuses.

On last night's Dancing With the Stars, Brandy rose to the top. That wasn't too big a surprise, but Jennifer Grey finishing fifth out of seven dancers was.

According to her partner, Derek Hough, blame it on the "guyliner."

D. Hough and J. Grey

Derek Hough blames the makeup department, not Jennifer Grey.

"This is what happened tonight," Derek said. "The dance was going well, I told [Jennifer] to get fierce, and she was all in it. And then at the end, this eyeliner got in my eye! Then I flew off and she was off balance and it was a mess."

"So basically, the moral of the story is don't wear eyeliner if you're a guy."

Hmm. You know, it doesn't seem to bother Adam Lambert ...

Anyway, also throwing a wrench into Derek's excuse? Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas also rocked the eyeliner look, and did much better than last week.

"She did really well with this one. Out of all the dances, this was the most natural for her," said Mark, "I'm definitely more confident with the tango."

Rick Fox was channeling his inner Taylor Momsen, too.

"It's obviously left a statement," he said. "It's never been on someone this tall before, right? But I was not alone in the guyliner department tonight."

Will any of the above couples pay the price tonight? Unlikely. Kurt Warner and Anna Trebunskaya are our pick to head home, but what do we know?

Who are you rooting for on Dancing With the Stars?
